The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code. The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code. In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year. On 4 digits date codes, the 1st and 2nd digits are the last two digits of the year.

In fact, it was likely that your parents were steering you in the direction of accordion lessons. The Beatles — and of course others — stopped all that. Suddenly, electric guitars were 1 on every kids Christmas list. Companies that had been manufacturing Accordions for 20 years, retooled for electric guitars.

Well known users “With a balanced low-impedance output, you could use long cables without all the problems inherent in unbalanced high-impedance lines. Gibson was keen on having the low-impedance transformer close to the amp, so we made a special cable with a transformer on the other end, which you had to have in order to use it.

But if you forgot your cable, you were out of luck—so we added the switch to go from low to high impedance. One position on the Les Paul Bass was meant to sound just like the Precision, and all the other settings were extra choices for the player. The Triumph sounded so good it was scary; it was the finest bass I knew how to come up with, but the kids of that time were not ready for so many options.

If I could have done something different, I would have made a bass with one great sound. Other changes from it’s predecessor were cosmetic; all controls were situated on the front mounted control panel, rather than onto the wood itself. The standard finish was natural mahogany, with white becoming available from This bass also featured the split diamond inlays on the headstock, and block position markers replacing dots on the neck.

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.

As you have probably noticed, there is plenty of information here to help date the brands that I am interested in. But where does that leave everyone else? Well I’m not one to leave you out in the informational cold, so here’s something that I use quite often in dating amplifiers and electric guitars. It’s called the “source-date code”, and it can help determine the approximate age of an electric instrument by the date its components were manufactured.

This is my Fender Blues Deluxe amp. It’s a beauty. I’ve had it for years and I love it. It’s full of Fender. Really, there’s so much Fender in here that it bursts out in sparkly loveliness whenever I plug in a Strat.

Go to menu top I never heard anything better than a Fender if we’re talking about the big manufacturers. Later on, in the Guitar section, I’ll also talk about Standel and EchoSonic , but they’re produced in such small numbers that it’s fair to say they’ll only have historic interest to the most of us So As long as you get a tube Fender you’ll probably be on the right track, because they all sound pretty good. It doesn’t have to be vintage at all, but they do look pretty cool.

Actually I started out playing a vintage Vox AC 30 and it wasn’t bad at all. The sound was very ‘tube’ and that’s what you’re looking for, but Fender is still the better choice for Rockabilly.

I promise the tables will still be there after you finish reading. We also received a report of a tweed 5G12 Concert. The 5G12 Concert is the earliest version from very late and early so the existence of a tweed example, while extremely rare, is certainly plausible since Fender was making lots of tweed amps during the same time period.

See below for some suggestions. Cabinet closed back, a big advantage for both durability and direction of sound is very robust and solid, However, it does make this amp weigh more than some would like it to given its small footprint. Here is a group of ’67 to ’70 Kustoms along with a couple of Gibsons from the same era. Also offered, but not shown, was a 1×15 cabinet the same size as the 2×12 and a 3×15, which was one of the largest made. K PA heads Though technically PA heads, these are used extensively for guitar, and show the full complement of four channels, all with reverb. Kustom did not make a K head, this one was created from a K combo. Interior Note the simplicity of the early Kustom by Ross head compared to the later Kustom Electronics head picture taken with the reverb tank removed for clarity.

Also joining the Univox amp line in ’71 (illustrated in a ’72 flyer) was the Univox U Minimax Amplifier, already showing a different style, with dark tolex covering but still the oval logo plate on the upper left of the grille, now covered in black with vertical “dotted” lines (surrounded by a white vinyl strip).

They could easily have been sold as new amps for several years after this, so someone who claims they or someone they know bought one new in could easily be telling the truth. A dealer with a storefront on ebay recently claimed to have found a NOS new, old stock Kalamazoo with cover in the store’s attic; the amp in the photos looked like it came out of a time capsule so I have no reason to doubt them.

Construction The chassis is thin steel, but plenty strong for a practice amp, and they held up well on the road. The biggest problems are the cabinet, made of fabric covered particle board and the baffle, made of thin pressboard. Even these holds up well if the amp isn’t abused too badly. But one good drop can ruin the baffle. Kalamazoos never had standby switches or ground switches.

As noted below, the tubes were of excellent quality. Apparently Gibson cut costs primarily by not using wood for the cabinets, the thin, steel chassis, and getting rid of anything that wasn’t absolutely necessary, not by scrimping on electronics component quality. Because of the time frame these were produced mid s , they all have two-conductor power cords.

For safety’s sake, these should be replaced with three wire power cords.
